Dog Saliva and Cleaning a Sock

There was a time where my socks got impure from dog saliva. I rubbed dirt over the socks, at end of which there was no wetness from the impurity. Then, I washed them in a bucket of water multiple times, without changing the water. Have the socks become pure, or has the water become impure?

A:

In the Hanafi school in this scenario the water would become impure and the sock would remain impure. This is because the dog saliva is a physical impurity that needs to be removed with water. The wiping of dirt would not have affected this. Then dunking it in a bucket to wash it would transfer the impurity to the bucket and leave both of them impure. The sound way to do it would have been to pour water from the bucket onto the sock, squeeze it out, and repeat until the impurity had been removed to your best estimation.

It is worth noting that in the Maliki school dog saliva is not impure.
