Attending a Non-Muslim Friend’s Wedding at a Church
Q:
What is the ruling in the Hanafi school regarding attending a catholic wedding at church with an offering?
A:
Some Hanafi scholars stated that it is disliked (makruh) for a Muslim to enter a church. They said this because of the false beliefs and actions that take place there. The level of dislikedness would be related to the factors around the visit itself.
If someone went with the intention to maintain relations with someone who is close to them, avoided partaking in any acts of worship, and would not be tested in their faith by being present in such a place, then the ruling would be somewhere between not the best thing to do (khilaf awla) and mildly disliked.
It is not fully understood what is meant by an offering in the question. Often this term is used to mean monetary collections. One should not contribute a donation towards the church. If what is meant by it is some sort of prayer service, then participation in this should also be avoided.
It is also worth noting that some of the other madhhabs were more lenient on the issue of Muslims entering churches.
This response from Sh. Salah Abu al-Hajj is related although not exactly the same.
